Chief Buffalo's Reservation

34. Chief Buffalo’s Reservation. The 1854 Treaty with the Chippewa provided Chief Buffalo of the La Pointe Band with a section of land of his choosing. He selected a one-mile area adjoining Minnesota Point in the heart of present-day Duluth. However, Chief Buffalo's death in 1855 allowed others to misrepresent and sell his claim. The interactive map on this website shows the area assigned to the "Chief Buffalo Tract" after the land was surveyed in 1857.
